Clear, Comfortable Vision with Specialty Contact Lenses

Not everyone can achieve their best vision with standard contact lenses. Some patients have eye conditions, corneal irregularities, or comfort concerns that require a more customized solution. Specialty contact lenses are designed to address these unique needs, helping patients achieve clearer vision and improved comfort when traditional contacts are not enough.

At Optometric Group, we provide specialty contact lens evaluations and fittings tailored to your eyes, vision needs, and lifestyle.

What Are Specialty Contact Lenses?

Specialty contact lenses are custom-designed lenses created for patients who cannot achieve optimal vision or comfort with traditional soft contact lenses. These lenses are made using advanced materials and fitting techniques to accommodate unique eye shapes, medical conditions, and vision challenges.

Because specialty lenses are customized, they often provide better vision, improved comfort, and more stable results than standard contact lenses for qualifying patients.

Who Can Benefit from Specialty Contact Lenses?

Specialty contact lenses may be recommended for patients who have:

  • Keratoconus
  • Irregular corneas
  • High astigmatism
  • Severe dry eye syndrome
  • Corneal scarring
  • Corneal transplants
  • Post-LASIK or post-surgical vision changes
  • Difficulty wearing traditional contact lenses
  • Myopia management needs
  • Complex vision prescriptions

Many patients who have been told they are “not a good candidate” for contact lenses discover that specialty lenses provide a comfortable alternative.

Our Specialty Contact Lens Options

Every patient’s eyes are different. During your evaluation, our team will determine which lens design is most appropriate for your needs.

Specialty Contact Lenses for Keratoconus

Keratoconus causes the cornea to thin and gradually change shape, making clear vision difficult with traditional eyewear. Specialty contact lenses are often one of the most effective ways to improve vision for patients with keratoconus.

Depending on your needs, our team may recommend scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, or other custom lens designs.

What to Expect During a Specialty Contact Lens Fitting

A specialty contact lens fitting is more detailed than a standard contact lens exam because every lens is customized to your eyes.
Your appointment may include:

  • A comprehensive eye examination
  • Detailed corneal measurements
  • Advanced corneal mapping and imaging
  • Discussion of your vision goals and lifestyle
  • Trial lens evaluation
  • Customized lens design and ordering
  • Follow-up visits to refine fit and performance

Our goal is to create a lens that delivers both excellent vision and long-term comfort.

Benefits of Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty contact lenses offer advantages that traditional lenses often cannot provide.

Benefits may include:

  • Sharper, more stable vision
  • Improved comfort
  • Better management of complex eye conditions
  • Reduced symptoms associated with irregular corneas
  • Greater success for hard-to-fit patients
  • Customized solutions for unique visual needs
  • Enhanced quality of life and daily function

Many patients are surprised by the difference a properly fitted specialty lens can make.

Frequently Asked Questions About Specialty Contact Lenses

What makes a contact lens a specialty contact lens?

Specialty contact lenses are custom-designed lenses created for patients with unique vision needs or eye conditions. Unlike standard soft contact lenses, specialty lenses are tailored to the shape of your eyes and may be used to manage conditions such as keratoconus, severe dry eye, high astigmatism, or irregular corneas.

Are specialty contact lenses comfortable?

Yes. While some specialty lenses may feel different at first, most patients adapt quickly. Many people who struggle with traditional contact lenses find specialty lenses more comfortable because they are designed specifically for their eyes and visual needs.

Can specialty contact lenses help with dry eye?

In many cases, yes. Certain specialty lenses, particularly scleral lenses, create a fluid reservoir between the lens and the eye. This helps keep the eye hydrated throughout the day and can provide significant relief for patients with moderate to severe dry eye symptoms.

Can I wear specialty contact lenses if I have keratoconus?

Absolutely. Specialty contact lenses are one of the most common treatment options for keratoconus. Scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, and rigid gas permeable lenses can often provide clearer vision and greater comfort than traditional contact lenses or glasses.

How long does a specialty contact lens fitting take?

A specialty contact lens fitting is more involved than a standard contact lens exam because the lenses are customized to your eyes. Depending on the type of lens recommended, the process may require an initial consultation, advanced measurements, trial lenses, and one or more follow-up visits to fine-tune the fit and vision.

Dr. Sako is an awesome eye doctor. He is very friendly and patient. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for a new eye doctor. I have been a patient with La Paz Optimetrics for some 30 plus years and give them 5 Star ⭐️’s. Their equipment is all modern and up to date. They can take a picture of your inner eye in under a minute while my mom’s eye doctor still dilates her eyes with eye drops and she has to wait there 20 minutes for her eyes to dilate before they can exam them. Her appointments usually take about 2 hours. They preformed all my eye tests on me in 20 minutes. I got my eyes tested, saw doctor Sako and got new eye glass frames in 40 minutes. The doctors and staff are the best. They have a huge selection of eye glass frames and a beautiful waiting area.

They are GREAT! I've been bringing my family here for years, and the service is always excellent. The staff is incredibly kind, patient, and helpful. We've seen Dr. Lum and Dr. Yamamoto—both are professional, kind, and thorough. James, the specialist, is also very patient and really knows his stuff. We've tried other places, but always end up coming back. Great care and a solid selection of frames. Highly recommend!
